Drew Fischer Appointed to FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™

Australasia Bound.

Congratulations to CDSRA Member Drew Fischer on his appointment to the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™.

This will be Drew's second FIFA Women's World Cup following his appointment to France in 2019 and his third consecutive FIFA World Cup in the space of 4 years following his most recent endeavours in Qatar. He is one of five Canadian officials selected by FIFA to officiate in this tournament which include: Marie-Soleil Beaudoin (Nova Scotia), Myriam Marcotte (Quebec), Chantal Boudreau (Saskatchewan) and Carol Anne Chenard (Quebec).

Drew, 41, began his career refereeing local Calgary youth games at the age of 13 at CalGlen Soccer club, working his way up the local ranks before becoming a national list referee in 2007 at the age of 27. He officiated his first MLS game in August 2012 and has officiated in over 270 matches to date. He received his FIFA badge in 2015 and has gone on to officiate in several important continental and international matches and tournaments (highlighted below).

Off the field, Drew has continued to give back to his referee community, serving two terms on the CDSRA executive including a stint as the association’s Vice-President. He has also continued to be a mentor to many referees in the National program and has played an important role in helping develop the next crop of officials within Alberta which includes numerous CDSRA members.

Drew’s appointment to the FIFA Women’s World Cup comes off the back of a successful tournament in Qatar which saw him officiate 11 games, including the historic game between Costa Rica and Germany which saw Stephanie Frappart become the first woman to officiate a Men’s World Cup game as well as the Semi-Final between France and Morocco.
