Referee of the Month: Dmitri Kuts
The CDSRA Referee of the Month features referees of different ages, levels, and backgrounds to reflect the diversity in our referee community and our association. Our December 2024 Referee of the Month is Dmitri Kuts.

Q: Current Referee Level & Highest level attained:
A: District.
Q: When did you begin, and what motivated you to start refereeing?
A: I started refereeing back in Ukraine, in the city of Zaporizhya. My motivation came from a personal experience as a player. During a final game, I suffered a two-footed tackle to my calf in the penalty area, but no foul was called. That incident left me injured and frustrated, and I realized the crucial role referees play in the game. I decided to become a referee to ensure fair and consistent decisions that impact players and teams significantly.
Q: What has been your most enjoyable game/memory of your referee career?
A: My most enjoyable game so far has been officiating the senior provincial championship in September. It was a challenging and rewarding experience that highlighted the skills I’ve developed over my refereeing career.

Q: What do you love most about refereeing?
A: What I love most about refereeing is the fast-paced and ever-changing environment. It pushes me to make quick, accurate decisions on the field while reflecting on them to improve. Additionally, I deeply appreciate the supportive referee community, especially the mentors and instructors who provide invaluable advice and encouragement.
Q: When did you first become a CDSRA member and what encouraged you to join?
A: I became a CDSRA member right after completing my entry-level course in April 2023. I was inspired by the incredible instructors, Alex and Raul, who made the course engaging and insightful. Joining CDSRA has been one of my best decisions. The support and guidance I’ve received from members have been phenomenal, and I’m incredibly grateful for it.

Q: What advice would you give to somebody just starting out refereeing?
A: Learn the basics thoroughly and be prepared to face challenges. You will encounter games that are not only enjoyable but also physically and emotionally demanding. Preparation is key to building confidence and fairness. Take full advantage of resources like RED and IRT sessions, which provide a wealth of knowledge and a strong foundation to start your refereeing journey.And please, do not hesitate to request a mentor.
Q: What do you do outside of refereeing and what are some of your interests?
A: Outside of refereeing, I am a second-year glazier apprentice. In my free time, I enjoy playing the drums and learning new languages.
